Media tycoon, Dr Iqbal Surve, has contradicted a statement by the ANC in the Western Cape that a R1 million rand donation to the party for its election campaign had been returned. Surve announced that he made a hefty donation to the ANC’s electoral efforts in the province through his company, Sekunjalo Investments. The businessman has been embroiled in an ongoing investigation into alleged corruption concerning the Public Investment Corporation. The ANC in the province has issued a statement that it had returned the donation citing relevations made at the commission of inquiry into allegations of impropriety concerning the PIC. Surve says the donation was a direct result of the request from the ANC in the Western Cape: “The request came from the ANC officials for the elections and they were very specific that they needed the funds for the food parcels for volunteers and people standing in the queues and they needed the funds to transport people to the actual election points because people did not have transport. But more importantly, they have not returned the funds, on the contary we have it on good authority that the funds have been disbursed to the regions.”
